Matchmaker.lk ("we", "our", "the platform") is Sri Lanka's free matrimony website connecting individuals seeking marriage proposals. Your privacy is extremely important to us. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, and how we protect it.

1. Information We Collect

When you create a marriage proposal profile on Matchmaker.lk, we collect the following information:

• Profile information you submit: name, age, gender, religion, mother tongue, location (city/country), education level, employment, salary range, and a personal bio
• Your email address (kept strictly private and never shown publicly)
• WhatsApp number (optional, private, never shown publicly)
• Profile photo (optional, displayed on your public profile)
• IP address (used for rate limiting, spam prevention, and security)

When you use the site's messaging, we also store:

• Interest messages you send or receive, and whether each one was accepted, declined, or blocked
• Conversation messages you exchange with another member after an interest is accepted
• Blocks and reports you make, including any reason you give us
• The IP address each message was sent from

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information collected solely for the purpose of operating the matrimony platform:

• To display your marriage proposal profile to potential matches browsing the site
• To forward interest messages from other users to your registered email address
• To deliver messages between you and members you have chosen to connect with
• To notify you of your profile's approval, rejection, or removal
• To notify you, at most once a day, that you have unread messages
• To keep the platform safe: investigating reports, acting on blocks, and reviewing messages flagged by our automatic checks
• To prevent spam, fake profiles, and misuse of the platform
• To improve the quality and performance of the site

3. What We Never Do

We take your privacy seriously. We commit to the following:

• We never sell your personal data to third parties or advertisers
• We never display your email address or phone number publicly on your profile
• We never send you marketing or promotional emails without your explicit consent
• We never share your contact details with other users without your permission

4. Profile Visibility

Once approved, your marriage proposal profile is publicly visible on Matchmaker.lk. The following information is shown on your public profile:

• Your first name (or display name), age, religion, mother tongue, city, education, and employment
• Your profile photo (if uploaded)
• Your personal bio

Your email address, WhatsApp number, and full contact details are always kept private and are never visible to other users.

5. Messaging Between Members

Matchmaker.lk works on a double opt-in basis. Another member can send you a single interest message; a conversation only opens if you accept it. You can accept, decline, or block, and declining is silent — the other person is never told why.

When someone sends you an interest, we email their message and profile card to your registered address. Your email address is never revealed to them.

Messages are stored, and our team can read them

This is the part we want to be completely clear about, because it may not be what you expect:

• Messages sent through Matchmaker.lk are stored in our database. They are not end-to-end encrypted.
• The Matchmaker.lk team can read them. We do this to investigate reports, act on blocks, and check messages that our automatic filters flag — for example messages containing phone numbers, links, or language associated with financial scams.
• If you report a conversation, the most recent messages in it are sent to our team so that we can judge the report properly.
• We do not read conversations for any other reason, and we never sell, publish, or share their contents with advertisers or other members.

If you would rather a conversation not be stored here, move to a phone call or another app once you are comfortable — that is a normal and expected step. Just remember that we cannot help with anything that happens off the platform.

Blocking

You can block any member at any time. A block is silent — they are never told. It stops all contact in both directions, closes any conversation you had, and hides each of your profiles from the other in listings and search. We keep a record of the block, and of any reason you give us, so we can act on repeat behaviour.

6. Data Retention

Your profile and personal data remain on the site until you request removal. To remove your profile and all associated data, visit our Remove Listing page and verify your email address. Profiles are typically removed within 24 hours of a verified removal request.

Deleting your profile also deletes the interest messages and conversations attached to it, including the copies visible to the other person.

We are moving to a policy of deleting messages older than 12 months. Reports and block records are kept for as long as they are useful for keeping members safe.

Emails we have already sent to your address — such as an interest notification — are in your inbox and your email provider's systems, and we cannot delete those.

7. Cookies

Matchmaker.lk uses minimal, essential cookies only for site functionality. We do not use tracking cookies or advertising cookies.

8. Third-Party Services

Matchmaker.lk uses Cloudflare for hosting and DDoS protection. Profile photos are stored on Cloudflare R2 secure storage. Our database is hosted on Supabase with row-level security enabled.

9. Safety and Personal Security

Matchmaker.lk is an open platform for Sri Lankan matrimony. Please use our site's messaging system to contact your preferred interests. Only share your phone number or other personal contact information when you are genuinely comfortable doing so.

Matchmaker.lk will never ask you for money. Neither should a genuine match. Never send money, share bank or card details, or act on a job, visa, or investment offer from someone you have met here — these are the most common scams on matrimony sites anywhere. If anyone asks, block them and tell us.

Matchmaker.lk is not responsible for any interactions, disputes, or outcomes that occur between users, whether on or off the platform.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. Continued use of the platform constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
